The new ACGME Common Program Requirements took effect on July 1. Although the ACGME announced the changes about a year ago, many programs were down to the wire in implementing the new rules, according to an American Medical News article.

Joanne Conroy, MD, chief health care officer with the Assn. of American Medical Colleges told American Medical News that many programs had to scramble to make the changes in time.

"They would have preferred to have had another year,” she said in the American Medical News article.

The article reports that smaller programs are having the most difficulty making the changes because they must hire new staff to replace the hours first year residents can no longer work.
