Tip of the week: Integrate practice-based learning and improvement into your curriculum

The literature on teaching methods for practice-based learning and improvement (PBLI) is growing. Most of the reports describe workshops, quality improvement projects, and the integration of PBLI practices into established learning activities during the residency.
Some programs have reported that the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Practice Improvement Modules are effective tools for teaching and learning quality improvement in practice. All of these methods are important beginnings. However, because PBLI is a habit, it becomes the basis for the entire curriculum and is experienced constantly by faculty members, residents, students, and staff members.
To accomplish this sort of integration, program directors should consider including four aspects of the teaching methods design:
- Orientation to PBLI as a cultural habit of the residency program
- Workshops for learning terminology, principles, and methods
- Existing teaching–learning activities modified to encompass the elements of PBLI
- Faculty development
