"Starting a residency is a challenge for anybody, even an American graduate," says Gerald P. Whelan, MD, FACEP, acculturation program director for the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Every resident has a new institution and new policies and procedures to learn, he says. "The international graduate has all of those things going on, as well as getting settled in the United States."
