Accepting transfer residents can present several challenges for residency programs, including evaluating potential transfer residents and acculturating transfers to a new program, facility, and faculty members.
Residency programs can help make resident transfers go more smoothly:
- Be sensitive to how accepting a transfer resident will affect your program, as well as the program from which the transfer is leaving
- Consider whether filling a vacancy in your program is necessary
- Plan ahead to collect the necessary documents from the transfer resident
- Compare the resident's previous program requirements to your program requirements to plan the resident's schedule
- Develop an individualized orientation
- Pair transfer residents with current residents who can help them adjust to the program
This week’s tip is from Residency Program Alert.
