Audit-based quality improvement becomes resident teaching opportunity

There's an inherent link between the quality of care a hospital provides and the education of its residents, ­according to the ACGME. Drawing from this notion, Linda ­Kirschenbaum, DO, and a team of physicians at Saint ­Vincent ­Catholic Medical Centers in New York City created an audit program that studied this link. The goal: to ­determine whether a physician-­conducted assessment tool for patients who ­unexpectedly ended up in the ­hospital's ICU could improve the overall care and become a means to educate residents.
