Residency Program Alert asked program coordinators to share their strategies for orientation planning. Their top tips to help orientation go more smoothly include:

  • Get feedback from residents who participated in last year's orientation
  • Use a grid to track documents and information incoming residents need to provide before they start working
  • Provide incentives and alternatives to ensure that ¬upper-level residents who are under contract with other programs can attend orientation
  • Break orientation into smaller pieces or hold follow-up sessions to avoid information overload
  • Give residents guidebooks and resources to find information after formal orientation is over
  • Host social events to give faculty and staff a chance to meet new residents outside of the orientation period

This week’s question and answer are from Residency Program Alert, March 2011.
