Two weeks ago, Residency Program Connection reported on a recent study from the Mayo Clinic that indicated the new duty hour limits imposed by the ACGME may negatively affect continuity of care and resident education.

Steven C. Stain, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical Center (NY) responds to this study and calls for GME leaders to respond appropriately to the changes occurring in resident training. His article, “The times, they are a-changing: Maybe we need to change too,” appears in The Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

“Adapting to the changing practice of medicine and ensuring communication with patients in a professional manner are essential. Unfortunately, most of us do not have effective methods of evaluating competencies in the areas other than medical knowledge or even know how to optimally teach those competencies,” Stain wrote.
