With duty hour compliance under the ACGME’s microscope, the GME community is taking a closer look at how the accreditor measures compliance with the standards. The ACGME Resident Survey is one of the main ways the ACGME determines compliance. If the survey identifies duty hour violations, programs can suffer serious consequences, including losing accreditation.

The survey found:

  • 19% of residents had difficulty understanding the questions
  • 35% discussed the survey with faculty or program directors prior to taking it
  • 17% received instruction on how to answer the survey
  • 15% reported not answering the questions truthfully
  • 37% felt the survey did not provide an accurate evaluation of their work hours

Study authors suggest that the ACGME measure work hour compliance based on actual data rather than a survey.
