Female med students think emergency medicine is for men, study says

Female medical students believe that emergency medicine is better suited for men, according to a new study, “Gender stereotypes: An explanation to the underrepresentation of women in emergency medicine,” published in the July issue of Academic Emergency Medicine.
In a survey of 255 third-year medical students from three medical schools who attended mandatory emergency medicine program in France, researchers found that gender stereotypes are common among medical students, particularly women.
“Women are underrepresented in emergency medicine residency programs in comparison with many other specialties,” states the study. “. . .Negative gender stereotypes among female medical students may lead to [emergency medicine] career avoidance, because of the decrease in their self-efficacy perception toward [emergency medicine] learning.”
