Videoconferencing is a practical and effective way for residents and fellows in rural areas to attend practice-based learning and improvement (PBLI) courses without the cost and inconvenience of long-distance travel to main teaching sites, according to a study in the February issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
"We evaluated the experience of radiology residents and local coordinators of a course delivered by videoconferencing to centers geographically separated from the main principal teaching site," said Kevin O'Regan, MD, lead author of the study, in a press release.
The 26 second-year radiology residents and eight local coordinators participated at eight separate sites reported that the videoconference did not negatively affect learning.
"The findings of this study demonstrate that the use of videoconferencing can enable successful completion of an education program for radiology trainees located at considerable distances from a main teaching site," O’Regan said.
