There are several resources available online to provide guidance and training on cultural competencies:

  • Society of Teachers of Family Medicine: Guidelines for teaching residents about cultural competence (www.stfm.org/corep.html).
  • National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services: Principles for providing culturally competent care (www.omhrc.gov/templates/browse.aspx?lvl=2&lvlID=15).
  • A Physician’s Practical Guide to Culturally Competent Care: A free training course for healthcare professionals on how to best service diverse patient populations (https://cccm.thinkculturalhealth.org).
  • ECFMG Acculturation Program: The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) provides free resources specifically geared toward international medical graduates with the goal of easing their transition into U.S. GME programs (www.ecfmg.org/acculturation/index.html).
  • The California Endowment: Look for the following titles:
    -  “A Manager’s Guide to Cultural Competence Education for Health Care Professionals”
    - “Principles and Recommended Standards for Cultural Competence Education of Health Care Professionals”
    - “Resources in Cultural Competence Education for Health Care Professionals”
    - “The Multicultural Health Series” (www.calendow.org/Collection_Publications.aspx?coll_id=26&ItemID=316)
