Opening the training program’s doors to observers,
medical student clerkships, or visiting residents and fellows
from other ACGME-accredited programs can create
an endless stream of paperwork for program coordinators
who are often responsible for processing and tracking
application materials for these individuals.
“This can be a full-time job if you get a lot of applicants,”
says Constance Clark, GME coordinator at
Florida Hospital in Orlando.
Coordinators already have a full-time job managing
the training program. To relieve some of the burden
on the coordinator, the program should develop
policies for observerships, clerkships, and visiting trainees
that only allow the most appropriate candidates to
participate.
