It figures that just when you get the hang of the ACGME’s 2003 duty hour standards, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) sweeps in and recommends new rules.
These recommendations are not required by the ACGME at this time, but it’s clear that new standards are coming. Although you don’t know what the final requirements will be, chances are you will have to adjust or possibly completely redesign your schedules, especially if the ACGME limits shifts to 16 hours as the IOM recommends.
