Match statistics show fewer medical students headed into family medicine

Although this was a record-setting year for the number of Match participants, the number of U.S medical school seniors that select family medicine has decreased by half since 1997, according to a March 30 article in American Medical News.
Additionally, there were 2,535 family medicine positions available through the Match, which is 100 fewer than in 2008. Fewer students choose family medicine because family physicians are paid less than their colleagues in other specialties and work longer hours than in the past, the article said. here has also been a decline in the number of allopathic medical school students entering internal medicine residency programs. The number has declined by 1% each of the last two years.
