Professionalism lectures that grab residents’ attention

Professionalism is a difficult concept to define and teach. Medical educators are challenged to develop presentations that drive home the ideals of professionalism for residents.
“We’ve learned very quickly that a bunch of talking heads and slides don’t work,” says Jo-Ellyn Pilarski, senior program associate at HealthPartners Institute for Medical Education, a nonprofit organization based in Bloomington, MN, that provides education to healthcare professionals.
That’s why many program directors and faculty members turn to outside-of-the-box approaches, such as humor, art, provocative scenarios, and video clips, to grab residents’ attention and effectively teach professionalism.
