A new study indicates there is no evidence that current measurement tools can reliably assess the six ACGME core competencies independently of one another.
The study, entitled “Measurement of the General Competencies of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education: Systematic Review,” appears in the March 2009 issue of Academic Medicine.
A group of researchers examined peer-reviewed literature that discussed qualitative or quantitative data about assessment methods of the core competencies. They reviewed 56 articles published between 1999 to March 2008.
Additionally, study authors found that articles looking at evaluation tools developed to assess the competencies failed to do so reliably or validly.
