Link core competencies to National Patient Safety Goals

The Joint Commission’s 2009 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) took effect January 1. This begs the following questions: Can your residents name the NPSGs, and do they realize that many of the protocols they follow daily are mandated by the goals?
On the long list of lessons that you must teach residents, patient safety is no doubt at the top—right next to the ACGME core competencies. Although both of these topics are equally important, many medical educators overlook the ties between them and fail to integrate the NPSGs into core competency educational activities.
