The start of spring signals that it’s time for residency programs to identify next year’s chief residents. Whether your program is beginning the selection process or is already in transition, program directors and coordinators should ensure rising chiefs are prepared for their new role.
When given the proper tools, chief residents can solve problems, make the program run more smoothly, and improve resident training—all of which make program directors’ and coordinators’ lives much easier.
Set chief residents up for success by structuring your program to support their leadership role and by providing them with formal leadership training.
