Although many residency program managers are still making their way through interview season, it’s never too early to start thinking about getting your orientation materials together. One thing you can start compiling now is the resident handbook. Typically, this handbook contains all the various documents that the residents will need to refer to throughout the year. The program director, chief resident, and coordinators should review the resident handbook annually. Consider including the following in your handbook:
- Policies and procedures for residents
- Procedures for each service
- On-call policies and procedures
- Due process policies
- Instructions for procedure diagnosis and tracking
- Goals and objectives for all rotations
- List of ACGME core competencies
- Sample evaluation forms
- Instructions on resident portfolios
- Instructions for all information systems, with log-on information
Today’s question and answer come from The Residency Program Coordinator Handbook by Dianna Otterstad, BA.
