Every PIF has a section for hospital and patient data, including:
- Number of beds
- Admissions
- Discharges
- Average daily census
- Deaths
- Consultations
Many residency coordinators get very frustrated when trying to collect this data. To make this information request easier, develop a relationship with the medical records department and its manager. Give as much notification as possible when asking for information from the hospitals that your residents rotate through. Follow up with those medical record departments every couple of weeks so that they understand the gravity of the situation. If the residency coordinator cannot obtain the data, the program director should step in and approach the individual in charge of this area of the hospital. This will usually do the trick in getting the information.
Today’s question and answer are from Program Information Form Made Simple, by Jeri Whitten, C-TAGME and Vicki Hamm.
