Tip of the week: Don't rely on the resident program manual

During resident orientation, the ACGME requires that residents receive the program policy manual. Although your new residents eagerly took that manual just a few weeks ago, you’re probably realizing that many have never read it. This means that you must be ready to field and respond to questions regarding the following policies:

  • Vacations
  • Educational meetings
  • Medical leave
  • Counseling services
  • Proper medical record documentation
  • Dress code

You may refer your residents to the manual, but it is important for your residents to know that they can come to you with questions, even if they are as general as, “When do we have vacation?” Communicating directly with them will help minimize misinformed residents on policies that were incorrectly given to them by higher-level residents or other staff members.

Today’s tip comes from The Residency Program Director's Handbook  by Robert V. Higgins, MD.
