The ACGME Institutional Requirements state that institutions must provide a safe environment for their residents. To meet this requirement and keep residents feeling comfortable and out of harms way, many institutions have utilized the following programs:
• Training workshops for self-protection
• Escort services for residents leaving the hospital after hours
• Links to local police services for enhanced security
• Specific phone lines to call in case of emergency
• Contingency plans for extreme situations, such as hostage situations, fire, and bomb threats
