In order to comply with work hour requirements and avoid resident fatigue, take the following actions:
• Know your program-specific requirements. These can vary widely, for example, emergency department requirements are more restrictive than surgical requirements.
• Know the ACGME’s duty hour requirements.
• Frequently refer to ACGME’s duty hour FAQs.
• Check whether there is an ACGME specialty-specific FAQ on fatigue or duty hours for your specialty.
