The old saying goes, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth,” but that’s exactly what many hospitals and residency programs are doing when it comes to the freebies that medical industry representatives dole out.
Professional organizations, bioethicists, doctors, and even the public have been discussing the conflict-of-interest (COI) issues associated with the physician-industry relationship for years. Since the new ACGME Institutional Requirements (effective July 1, 2007) mandated that institutions have a vendor policy in place, this topic has moved to the forefront of GME.
