WHO calls for more research in patient safety

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, October 16, 2007

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently called for more research to improve patient safety at an international conference held in Porto, Portugal. The organization reported that research is needed in both individual healthcare areas and underlying processes and organizational structures that contribute to unsafe care.

The WHO called for further research in the following areas:

  • Healthcare-associated infections, specifically in the area of antimicrobial resistance and the spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens

  • Adverse drug events, particularly in developing countries

  • Surgical and anesthesia errors

  • Unsafe injection practices

  • Blood safety, including the effectiveness of blood safety strategies and behavior risk factors among blood donors in developing countries

  • Adverse medical device events, specifically the types, frequency, and clinical settings of such events
