Canadian hospital to screen for superbugs

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, October 16, 2007

The Ottawa Hospital will screen every overnight patient for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant enterococci, which contribute to healthcare-acquired infections killing more than 8,000 Canadians each year, according to The Globe and Mail.

A pilot program confirmed that many patients considered low-risk by hospital staff were infected. Over the past decade, Canada has seen a tenfold increased in such infections.
