In Victoria, Australia, emergency departments lag

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, October 16, 2007

In Victoria, Australia, about 2,700 patients in the past year waited more than 24 hours in the emergency department, according to The Age. Experts said lack of available beds often create the delays. One in five of the patients waiting longer than a day had an acute mental illness.

The Australian Medical Association said the state's citizens were "falling below the government's own low standard."
