Staff at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ, accustomed to hearing beepers, pages, and other forms of communication have started using wireless devices worn around the neck to deliver messages, reports the Newark Star-Ledger. The new system has helped improve patient safety by allowing for faster communication among staff.

The system works by allowing users to say the name of the person with whom he or she needs to speak and automatically connecting to that person's wireless device. Eight hundred members of Saint Barnabas' staff have been outfitted with the devices, including workers in the emergency department, pharmacy, and operating rooms.
