WHO to expand its Emergency and Essential Surgical Care Project

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, October 2, 2007

The World Health Organization plans to involve a larger number of low and middle income countries in its Emergency and Essential Surgical Care Project. This program helps train healthcare workers in performing simple, but often life-saving surgeries, giving patients emergency care, and administration of anaesthesia.

Already present in 22 countries, the project will bring necessary equipment to new countries. In many developing countries, there is not enough trained staff to perform certain types of surgeries, or trained workers are not located in rural areas.
