Indian state focuses on reducing malaria-related deaths

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, September 18, 2007

The Indian state of Orissa will focus efforts on reducing malaria-related deaths by 50% by the year 2010, reports Newindpress.com. Deaths related to malaria are higher in this state than in any other in India, with the 40 % of those people infected living in Orissa. A shortage of doctors and lack of infrastructure on behalf of the government has led to the higher incidence rate.

The National Malaria Eradication Programme has helped lower rates of malaria in the past 30 years. However, a stronger emphasis on creating an awareness among those people who live in the state is needed.
