Queensland patients to be identified by bar code to prevent wrong-site surgery

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, September 18, 2007

In an effort to quell the rising number of misidentified patients, which in some cases has led to wrong-site surgery, Queensland Health's Patient Safety Centre of Queensland, Australia, has announced the adoption of a bar coding program, reports The Courier Mail. Patients will be given a bar code upon entry to the hospital.

The technology required to run a bar-coded system will be an investment for the Queensland centre, and though the system will not completely prevent patient misidentification or wrong-site surgery, it will be valued, reports The Courier Mail.
