Canadian government to get serious about superbugs

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, September 18, 2007

The Public Health Agency of Canada recently announced that it will have a plan by January 2008 for dealing with the growing number of patients who contract a hospital-acquired infection, reports The Globe and Mail. The latest numbers show more than 220,000 people become infected per year, and of that number, 8,000 patients die.

Canada, like most other countries, is having a tough time dealing with increasing infection rates. The hardest hit provinces are Quebec and Ontario, according to The Globe and Mail. Until now, the federal government has not been involved in monitoring such infections. Instead, that was left up to individual hospitals.
