NHS warns that electronic medical records may compromise patient information

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, September 18, 2007

A primary care trust to Britain's National Health Services (NHS) warned that patient data could be compromised under the National Programme for IT (NPfIT). The program, which was launched in 2002, has a goal of creating an electronic record that can be viewed by physicians throughout the country. However, a secure network is necessary for the program to function properly. ComputerWeekly.com reports that a celebrity's record was compromised recently when more than 50 unauthorized physicians viewed it.

Though many electronic record systems are created with a log function, so who has accessed the system can be seen, ComputerWeekly.com reports that doctors often log on together making it hard to determine who is viewing records. It is unclear if the NHS will have the power to police the use of the electronic system.
