Physicians, clinics, and hospitals should follow the lead of restaurants and book patients for same-day visits, according to an article in the online magazine Slate.

Physicians across the country have made the move to same day appointments and found that the system is manageable and keep patients happier. It also allows them to catch serious problems quickly, such as some types of cancer. The biggest challenge is working through the appointments that have already been scheduled, which will require working extra hours.

The author of the article, Marina Krakovsky, also addressed the issue during an online chat.
