E-prescribing more common, say advocates

More hospitals and providers are using electronic prescribing programs to improve patient safety and reduce errors, according to advocates of the technology. State governments are starting to require the technology's use in hospitals and physician's offices, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Minnesota passed a law requiring that physicians that do business with the state's health plan use electronic prescribing. Proponents argue the technology increases safety by reducing medication errors. It can also save money by preventing the care required when a patient is given the incorrect prescription.
