Transcriptionist shortage in Canada could affect patient safety

Medical transcriptionists are in short supply in one Canadian province, which could prolong important diagnoses and negatively affect patients, says CBCNews. Transcriptionists have the job of typing up dictated recordings of healthcare professionals in a report which goes into a patient's medical record.

In Newfoundland and Labrador the wait time between initial recording and transcription has run up to seven weeks, up from the average time of two weeks. This time could be the difference between life and death for some cancer diagnoses, says CBCNews.
