JCI releases third edition of international standards

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, September 4, 2007

Joint Commission International (JCI) released the third edition of its international standards last month. Any hospitals accredited by JCI will be surveyed using the new standards as of January 1, 2008. Any changes made to the standards were decided by Regional Advisory Councils in Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East, as well as surveyors, accredited organizations and their staff, and healthcare experts.

Major changes include an added emphasis on leadership in organizations for all areas of performance, the addition of six international patient safety goals, and the presence of new chapters on anesthesia and surgical care, medication management, and communications management.
