Australians suffer from worst flu outbreak in five years

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, August 7, 2007

Patient safety is suffering at Queensland hospitals as the state suffers from the worst flu epidemic in five years, reports The Courier-Mail. Hospitals' staff are being pushed to the limit as larger than normal numbers of patients suffering from the flu need care and are admitted at hospitals. Usually the flu kills a few hundred elderly people each year in Queensland, according to the article. This year, however, officials warn the toll will be much higher.

Specifically, larger numbers of children are being tested for and have acquired the flu. The number of cases the state has seen this year is currently double the number it usually is at this time.
