Alberta to enforce mandatory infection control standards

Hospitals in Alberta, Canada, will be implementing a new set of mandatory infection control procedures after the Health Quality Council of Alberta found problems in this area at most facilities, reports the Edmonton Journal.

The council found that after a 2003 outbreak of a superbug, many sanitation precautions were still not implemented, such as a lack of hand gel dispensers available, water being used to clean equipment, and the reuse of equipment only supposed to be used once.

The council reported that a general lack of a "culture of safety" among staff helped to propel the superbug outbreak. Also, legislation determining who is ultimately in charge of infection control standards seemed to be unclear.
