International Health Regulations take effect in US

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, July 24, 2007

As of July 17, the United States must comply with International Health Regulations (IHRs). These regulations are designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases internationally and do so with the least amount of interruption to world trade and travel. They also should open up communication lines among counties about international health emergencies.

Countries complying with the IHRs must report certain outbreaks immediately to the World Health Organization. These include smallpox, polio, SARS, and any new human cases of influenza strains.
