Immediate action taken against English hospital for poor hygiene

English officials ordered immediate changes in hospital procedures at Chase Farm Hospital in North London after health inspectors found that staff members were not adequately trying to prevent the spread of superbugs MRSA and Clostridium difficile, according to The Guardian. The National Health Service (NHS) used for the first time its legal ability to enforce the hygiene code, which has been in effect since October 2006.

Some of the violations included staff not being aware of isolation procedures for those patients infected, no sanitizing alcohol gel provided for staff, and no budget for infection control.

On July 4, new health secretary Alan Johnson announced a stronger commitment in battling these superbugs.
