United Nations warns that Millennium Development Goals won't be met

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, July 10, 2007

The United Nations (UN) created a list of eight human rights goals in 2000, part of its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) project, which were to be achieved by 2015. At the halfway point, the UN is predicting that not all goals, including reducing the spread of AIDS and tuberculosis, will be met by that time unless the world's wealthier countries increase their budgets for international aid, according to The Guardian.

The number of people infected with AIDS has risen to 40 million in sub-Saharan Africa. This is the only region of the world which tuberculosis rates have increased, as well. None of the countries located in this area of the world are on track to comply with the MDGs. The prevalence of diarrhea among children is a growing problem, as many have been vaccinated but do not have access to clean water and either become sick or are forced to spend their time finding clean water instead of attending school.
