World Health Organization’s revised regulations go into effect

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, June 26, 2007

New International Health Regulations (IHR), revised by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005, went into effect June 15. The revised set of regulations is intended to secure the world against global health threats such as epidemics caused by chemicals or contaminated food.

The WHO cited the 2003 SARS emergence and the threat of an influenza pandemic as reasons for increased regulation and global cooperation. Requirements include immediate notification of health emergencies, a 24-hour alert system, required rights for international travelers, and increased global partnerships.
