Joint Commission expands hand hygiene goal to WHO guidelines

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, June 26, 2007

Joint Commission-accredited facilities now have expanded choices in meeting hand hygiene guidelines. The change is part of The Joint Commission's new 2008 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), which now states in NPSG #7 that healthcare organizations can comply with either the World Health Organization's (WHO) or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's hand hygiene guidelines.

"Compliance with the WHO Hand Hygiene Guidelines or CDC hand hygiene guidelines will reduce the transmission of infectious agents by staff to [patients], thereby decreasing the incidence of health care-associated infections," The Joint Commission said in the July issue of its Perspectives newsletter. The Joint Commission released its 2008 National Patient Safety Goals yesterday.
