New York City will provide free electronic medical record software to hospitals, clinics, and physicians in the city to improve patient safety, according to The New York Times.

The program is aimed at facilities and practicioners who care for the city's poor. In general, new technologies are usually implemented at facilities that can afford them, which means more alffluent patients usually are the first to see the improvements that come with technology, according to the Times.

The software will be sent to 1,500 caregivers in the city over the next two years at a cost of about $20 million.
