A new program at Harvard medical school has third-year med students follow the same patients for a year, to gain a better understanding of the patient's experience in the medical setting. The new program started in earnest this year, according to The Boston Globe.

The new system replaces one where third years would move from hospital to hospital every three months. Instead, the student remains at one facility and follows the cases of a set of patients. The article follows medical student Michael Tang, who accompanied a cancer patient to over a dozen appointments through the year, and waited with his family in waiting rooms and was there when the family discussed treatment.

Harvard hopes that the new program will give students an enhanced understanding of what patients go through when navigating the healthcare system.
