A study of six different patient safety initiatives found that an overarching culture of safety at the hospital was needed to produce the best compliance. The study appears in the current issue of Milbank Quarterly, according to a press release.

The benefits of a culture of safety have beenrecognized in other high-stakes fields, like aviation and the nuclear industry. In the hospital setting, such an accepting culture has been shown to allow better implementation of patient safety initiatives.

The initiatives studied included the implementation of rapid response teams, "red rules" for actions where noncompliance could lead to direct harm, operating room checklists and simulating crisis events as a teaching tool.
