A business column in The Denver Post advocated for legislation protecting nurses who come forward with complaints and concerns about lax patient safety practices.

The column highlights Donna Jaynes, who was fired after lodging complaints about lax quality and safety standards at a hospital not named in the column. She claims the firing was retaliatory. The hospital says she was fired because she was a problem employee.

There is currently no state law or statute that specifically bars hospitals from firing nurses who expose patient safety problems. The state legislature has a new bill aimed at protecting such workers.
