Unity Hospital of Fridley, MN, was highlighted by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) for cutting its patient death rate from one of the highest among Twin Cities hospitals to one of the lowest, the Pioneer Press reports.

The 275-bed facility copied successful methods from other hospitals: adding hospitalists, increasing efforts to prevent pneumonia among patients on ventilators, and reducing sepsis infections by encouraging earlier prevention or treatment with antibiotics.

IHI highlighted Unity in its 2006 report of hospitals leading the way toward safer care. IHI adjusts hospital mortality data by comparing the number of patients who died in a year with the number of patients expected to die because of their ages and conditions. A rate above 100 means a hospital lost more patients than expected.

The national rate dropped from 98 in 2001 to 90 in 2003. In that period, Unity's adjusted mortality rate dropped from 113 to 75, according to the Pioneer Press.
