Apologies may be protected in UT

Utah legislators are mulling a bill to protect apologies by hospitals and physicians from liability claims. The goal is to allow physicians to apologize for mistakes, which is practically impossible if such a declaration can be used in a court of law, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Proponents say the bill would help allay anger and fear by patients, and also reduce the number of malpractice claims filed. Critics, however, say the bill would prevent important information from making it into a courtroom, and that the proposal protects physicians to the detriment of patients.
